Error code F05 on some Hotpoint (and some Indesit) washing machines means the pressure switch has “jammed” on. So the washing machine thinks it is full of water and refuses to spin. It may indeed be full of water – but not necessarily.
Before a washing machine spins the laundry it needs a signal that the water has pumped away successfully so it knows that it’s safe to spin. This error indicates that for various possible reasons it’s not getting that signal.
For best results perform a once per month maintenance wash using a washing machine cleaner, Hoover have produced Care and Protect which is perfect for cleaning the inside of your product and can be purchased from the spares section of our website.
This can be caused by a pump fault or blockage in the filter, but if this is the case then clearly when the fault occurs it should be stuck full of water or at least still have a fair amount inside (if so follow this not draining water guide and help stuck full of water).
But if the water has pumped away OK and you still get this error then it’s not a pump blockage, it’s a fault elsewhere. Suspects are that the pressure switch itself is jammed, (i.e. the switch is physically stuck), or it’s being jammed on by air pressure due to a blockage in the pressure chamber bottle at the bottom of the thin tube (connected to the pressure switch).
This can hold air pressure in the tube keeping the pressure switch on. In the latter case, pulling off the small tube at the base of the pressure switch should result in an audible click as the pressure is released and the pressure switch springs back to off. Bear in mind that if looking at the machine some time after the fault trapped air could slowly seep out over time. (Faults on pressure system)
Other faults listed as possible causes for this error are faulty connections and even the pcb, which I wouldn’t advise replacing. If you have this fault and can’t see anything obvious – call an engineer
